Dental Exams & X-Rays

Regular dental exams are an important part of preventive health care. Patients are recommended to schedule a dental exam every six months. During each visit, dental X-rays will be taken of your teeth, followed by cleaning, and examination. We will also ask about current health problems you’re having or medications you’re taking. These procedures will allow us to evaluate your risk of developing tooth decay and other oral health problems.

Dental Cleaning

This is a basic preventive treatment that includes removing minor plaque and tartar buildup to reduce the risk of gingivitis and cavities. It leaves teeth feeling fresh and clean. Getting a preventive cleaning every six months is ideal for most children and adults.

Composite Filling

This basic tooth restoration procedure is designed to fill in areas of tooth decay or damage. Fillings are appropriate for patients of all ages.

Root Canal

An infection in the pulp of a tooth is the most common cause of toothache. The root canal procedure relieves pain and stops the spread of infection. This treatment involves removing infected tooth pulp and restoring the tooth with a filling or crown.

Causes of inflammation or infection:

  • Deep decay
  • Repeated dental procedures on the tooth
  • Faulty crowns
  • Crack or chip in the tooth
  • Trauma to a tooth

Tooth Extractions

If a tooth is badly decayed, in an abnormal position, and not savable, tooth extraction may be the only option. We will ensure you are comfortable at all times during this procedure. We have many options to replace a tooth once it is removed. Your comfort will be maintained at all times and you will be offered Nitrous Oxide (gas) or conscious sedation (relaxing drugs) to help you through the procedure.

Reasons for tooth extraction:

  • Teeth blocking new teeth growth
  • Baby teeth remnants
  • Orthodontic Preparation
  • Some cases of infected teeth
  • Decayed or impacted wisdom teeth

Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is a wonderful way to help people who have a fear of the dentist to receive the dental care they need. The patient will be prescribed sedatives before coming to our office to create a more relaxed and comfortable treatment. Under sedation, the patient will not feel any pain and will remember little or nothing of the experience. However, they are still able to communicate with us.

Botox and Dermal Fillers

Effingham Smiles is excited to offer Botox and dermal fillers to our patients. We are thrilled to deliver a well-rounded list of services, not only in the dental and oral health sphere, but also in the realm of wellness and beauty.

How do healthy teeth and Botox go together? Both deliver confidence to our patients. And when you smile, we smile.

Consider this: a simple smile requires the use of at least 10 facial muscles; a hearty laugh more than 40. Repeated muscle movement over the years, unfortunately, often results in creases most of us typically frown upon in the mirror (11 muscles are used for the average frown, so be careful!).  All day, every day, our facial expressions communicate our feelings – and they leave a mark over time. Does that mean we must avoid smiling, laughing, frowning, or even crying? Not at all!

You may have heard about Botox in conjunction with wrinkle reduction and  migraine treatments. In the context of wrinkle reduction, Botox is injected into the muscles that causes lines from frequent use. The medication paralyzes and/or weakens the muscles to prevent its repetitive use, thus relaxing the muscles and softening wrinkles.

Botox injection dosage is carefully calculated and should only be administered by licensed practitioners.

Botox injections are typically used on:

  • Glabellar lines: Those are the vertical lines between the eyebrows, often caused by frowning and furrowed brows over time
  • Crow’s feet: The horizontal lines extending from the corner of the eyes; mostly caused by smiling
  • Forehead wrinkles: typically long vertical lines on the forehead, of varying depth
  • Bunny lines: the ridges on the bridge of your nose; often stem from repeatedly crunching up the face
  • Lipstick lines: vertical lines left behind by face puckering, smoking, sun exposure, or simply due to genetics
  • Marionette lines: folds that extend from the tip of the nose and down to the corners of the mouth
  • Chin dimpling: a criss-cross of lines on the chin, usually age-related

To be sure, all those developments with age are completely natural and for those who are comfortable with the marks their lives left behind, there is no reason to correct what nature created. For those, however, whose physical appearance is a matter of confidence, those in pursuit of ageless aging, and the ones who just don’t want to show or feel their years, Botox is an ideal solution for women and men alike.

Dermal fillers are used to plump up deep lines, especially, with a gel-like substance – typically containing hyaluronic acid and other agents — that is injected directly into the problem area. Dermal fillers do not paralyze muscles – instead these injections simply fill the lines, pushing them out from the inside to achieve a smoother appearance.

Dermal fillers are often used on (and to)

  • Lips: to increase fullness
  • Glabellar lines: to plump creases
  • Marionette lines: filling the deep lines
  • Enhance facial contours
  • Soften scars

Dermal fillers can last for up to 9 months before they are fully absorbed by the body. In comparison, the effects of Botox treatment lasts 3-5 months. Dosage and results vary by patient. Prior to treatment, we will discuss the patient’s needs and recommend the most effective course of action to achieve the desired goals.

Both Botox and dermal filler injections are outpatient procedures that take only a few minutes (plus consultation time). Dermal fillers often produce visible results almost immediately, while Botox injections take approximately 2 weeks to achieve their full potential.
